Grammar Lesson 36~ Adjectives

Lesson 36
Adjectives can be used in comparisons which means we change the form of the adjective when speaking of one, two, or more than two. They change either by adding er or est to the adjective or by using the words more or most before the adjective. Some are irregular in their form and must be memorized or looked up in the dictionary. The dictionary gives the forms for most words using er or est to form comparisons.
The three degrees of comparison are called (1) positive which states a quality of one thing or person, (2) comparative which compares two things or persons, and (3) superlative which compares more than two things or persons.
Examples: positive – new, careless, good; comparative – newer, more careless, better; superlative – newest, most careless, best
Write the comparative and superlative forms of the following adjectives.
1. jolly
2. honest
3. dim
4. friendly
5. little

The Weak to Shame the Strong

I love ironies. I like it when an irony in someone’s life draws so much attention that people must stop and think about the things of God. For example, Joni Ereckson Tada, who became a quadripalegic from a diving accident in her teens, but now for two or three decades has been painting, writing books and having speaking engagements all over the world and whats more, has a bright cheery personality to go along with her talents.
Here’s a verse that expresses this concept:
But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. ~1 Corinthians 1:27
Basically, in order to have this come true in your life, there must be the attitude to forsake whining, complaining, and self-pity. If the situation you’re in seems like God isn’t treating you as well as others around you, go ahead and accept your situation, have a positive attitude and
figure out how to make your situation the best it can be. You can even start with prayer, memorize and pray that Bible verse everyday. Ask Jesus to change your attitude and use your life to bring glory to God through your frustrating situation. After you pray, realize you should have the attitude of patience and try to learn each day something new from your struggle that will make you stronger.
Here are two more Bible verses to give hope to the situation:
And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. ~2 Corinthians 12:9
And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. ~Luke 9:23

The Rapture

I’ve been going to church regularly since I was about 12 years old.  When I would attend church way back then (late ’70’s, early ’80’s) there was a famous painting that would hang on the walls of churches.  It was about the Rapture, the day when Jesus returns and takes Christians from the earth.  The painting was not exquisite but was one to look at and study.

The end times don’t scare me.  Even though the Bible tells of terrible things that will happen on the earth.  When I read Jesus words about the end times I get afraid for a little bit wondering if something really scary will happen to us but just as Jesus tells these things will happen, he also says not to worry if your living each day doing what He wants you to do.  When our pastor talks of the end times at church He talks of them positively and with excitement without worry but that Bible prophecy is unfolding before our eyes.

It was a bit difficult but I found the painting on a blog site.

Memorize The Bible!!!!!

All Christians need to memorize God’s Word. If you do that you have Bible verses bumping around in your head. As Christian parents we need to fill their minds with memory verses!
Here is our Pastor John Barnett giving important reasons to thoroughly study the Bible. Please listen you will find it interesting:

America is Bible illiterate, even though most families have several copies of the Bible in a country where we have so much freedom to openly learn about Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit inspired Word of God.

The Lister

Lists really do make life more organized. I want to be more organized. Someone I admire, Elizabeth Elliot, is a list maker. According to a recent devotion she really gets into this activity. I like how Mrs. Elliot gives us a candid glimpse into her personal life. Making lists helps less than perfect memories too. I would do good putting into practice this simple but fruitful task.
I could make it fun. Here’s an idea, go to the Dollar store and pick up the cutest notepads I can find and then label them to benefit me the most. I would simply say, Things I want to do today . . . and then I would figure out a small reward for myself at the start of this listmaking discipline to prove to myself that I AM an organized, non-procrastinating, task-completing, dependable and reliable person! I would probably choose to keep a stash of Dove chocolate around, only eaten when a list is completed.
(I also enjoy making Microsoft Word documents. I could make my lists about family projects. I like to play with the fonts and choose fonts which help define the info I am typing out. I like adding variety and creativity to my documents to make them look better by playing around with the applications of Microsoft Word.)
Here’s Elizabeth Elliot’s Lists:
1. List of what must be done for the day
2. Engagement (speaking) calendar
3. Engagement book (essentially a planner)
4. Grocery list
5. Last year’s Christmas list– no duplicate gifts! (kept in engagement book)
6. Master list for suitcase packing
7. 2 prayer lists– daily one and a special list to add to each day of the week
Here’s Elliots full devotion:

Mocking Birds

I have the lovely little privilege of hearing a Mocking Bird outside my window this morning. It would be interesting to study all the different sounds our little singster can produce. I would have to record him and then count the sounds and their repetitions. My husband and I love it when he makes two unusual sounds, one of a frog and the other of a cell phone! In my mind I love to imagine that he’s pulling up sounds off the top of his head and he’s just have fun singing out a song as he focuses on saying them just as exactly as he had originally heard them.
The University of Florida provides some good basic foundational info about these interesting little creatures.
The Texas Park and Wildlife website provides pictures.
Here’s some more good info @ Audobon.org
The Mockingbird is Texas State bird.
My favorite!: A nice view of a Mockingbird as he boldly sings out to creation all around! . . . love it!!

All honor to God for His excellent amazing ability to create things for us to enjoy 🙂
