Loretta Lynn: Coal Miner’s Daughter
Country singer Wynona Judd once commented that only country singer/songwriter Loretta Lynn could make the words hard and tired (tar’d) rhyme. She’s right and Loretta did that with much talent when she gave pride to growing up poor in her childhood through her song Coal Miner’s Daughter.
Here are a few videos (the lyrics are at the end).
America’s Beauty: Bryce National Canyon
Two times in my life I have become aware of an unusual word. It’s the word hoodoo. I heard it once in the song, Born In the Bayou by the old band Creedence Clearwater Revival and then today when I looked up info about Bryce National Park.
Here are the definitions according to Merriam-Webster Online:
Internet Math Games
I found a website with a variety of games which help learn detailed math concepts. It is @ Internet 4 Classrooms. There are games to learn or reinforce math in areas such as geometry, fractions and multiplication. It is organized in topics on the left side of the page which simplifies the learning process!
America’s Beauty: Black Canyon of the Gunnison
Black Canyon of the Gunnison has been known as one of the United States’ monuments. In 1999 it became the 55th national park. This newly named national park is in Colorado. When I saw it on the Google maps arial view photo I thought its name describes it just right. It is a deep black from the satellite view.
The Red Eyed Idiot
Who hath woe?
who hath sorrow?
who hath contentions?
who hath babbling?
who hath wounds without cause?
who hath redness of eyes?
They that tarry long at the wine;
they that go to seek mixed wine.
Look not thou upon the wine when it is red,
when it giveth his colour in the cup,
when it moveth itself aright.
At the last it biteth like a serpent,
and stingeth like an adder.
Thine eyes shall behold strange women,
and thine heart shall utter perverse things.
Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea,
or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast.
They have stricken me,
shalt thou say,
and I was not sick;
they have beaten me,
and I felt it not:
when shall I awake?
I will seek it yet again.
–Proverbs 23:29-35
A laughable idiot, babbling and stumbling over his own two legs. . .
America’s Beauty: Acadia of Maine
I checked out a big, thick, heavy book from the library the other day. It was filled with full- spread glossy photos of the amazing beauty found in America’s National Parks. I wrote down all 50 parks represented in the book. I want to use this to have fun with my children. We can do internet geography with these names. And they will be exposed to the natural treasures America possesses.
At the top of the list is Acadia National Park found in Maine.
President’s Volunteer Service Award
Did you know you and your family can receive an award from the office of the U.S. president for volunteering!? There are four different awards. It starts at 50 hours per year! It is possible that one could be achieved by the end of the year! This would instill in your children Godly integrity and would lay a foundation to encourage them in giving unselfishly, just as the Bible verse says, “It is better to give than to receive.” Here’s the website, PVSA.
Current Events For Kids
Would you like your children to have a safe way to learn about current events in the world around us? It’s a Christian website that also sends out a newsletter. There are also other interesting things to read and do. It’s called God’s World News.
