The Birds of America

I bought an old book written in 1946 called Fifty Famous Americans. Each day I read to my kids an interesting person who made an impact on America. Today we learned about someone I never really learned about before.
His name is John James Audobon.

He was a naturalist in the early 1800’s. All his life he enjoyed studying birds. He was an artist and would paint them. Over the years he collected over a thousand detailed pictures of birds. He was the inspiration of the organization today that is known as the Audobon Society. He published his first editions between 1827 and 1837. His paintings are over 180 years old but can be studied in detail by anyone who wants to get acquainted with the birds of America. Here is a website called Harmony that has a slideshow. There is also a website that has the entire content of the 1840 version of the 7 volumes of all of John Audobon’s pictures.
