Elizabeth and Zechariah Vinette

I was part of a small play today. Today was the first Sunday that the congregation began the Christmas season. They started singing Christmas Carols.

I was in a vinette that told about Elizabeth and Zachariah and their baby John. The part I played was a woman and I had three lines and I was Elizabeth’s friend, Eliora. We had a few practices under a good and interesting leader. His name is Brian. He is a real actor and also has produced a local made movie. He was patient, taught us some good technique and helped us to get more polished. His wife, Mary, and a couple of others helped us with costumes.
This morning as Elizabeth and I were waiting behind a door to make an entrance, I heard the congregation singing Emanuel. It’s a short simple song. It has the words, Emmanuel, Emmanuel
His name is called Emmanuel
God with us, Abide with us
His name is called Emmanuel
I looked out a small window in an entrance door and saw the congregation singing that song. I realized how much I love to hear it. I started getting a bit emotional. I thought I can’t do this! I’ve got to keep my composure and concentrate and perfectly deliver my lines! So, I just abruptly cut the emotion . . . even though it was a good one to have because I was enjoying singing honoring words to Christ with His church. . . I love the thought of doing that.
This is the first year I’ve been in a Christmas play in front of a large church. But it was okay. As we practiced one day, I thought, I don’t care if my knees shake, I really want to do this. I also wanted the boost of confidence that comes along with trying something different or new. You might fail or you might succeed. You just give it all you got! and just like I told my siblings at our family Christmas party, if you mess up you just go on. If you embarrass yourself, try to make a quick joke and hope the people will laugh at it!
The vinette went well. I hope to do it again. Hopefully, next time I’ll get more lines. I’ll just study harder to get them perfect! Delivering lines deals with words and I love to study and use words. I also want to learn how to pretend in the biggest way and “really get into the part” and put myself into that person’s life.
