Spinach Versus Doritos!

My daughter Ginny and I are taking a spinach challenge. According to stats two thirds of Americans are obese! This is probably true because we eat out alot and we snack alot while watching TV.
Our goal: Eat 1 cup of raw spinach for a TV snack (about 5 times a week).

So why not make an easy change like this to take better care of yourself? I could sit and eat an entire bag of Dorito tortilla chips while watching a couple of hours of TV with my family. If I make this small change I could make my body healther and give myself some energy.
Let’s compare a bag of Doritos to a bag of raw baby spinach. Doritos cost about $3.29. Doritos have no transfats but they have other less than healthy oil in which they are deep fried. They are incredibly tasty. But they contain an unhealthy flavor enhancer called Monosodium Glutamate. (Oriental restaurants are notorious for using this to make their food taste better.) Plus Doritos contain artificial colors and flavors that don’t help your body function. The tortilla chips are also enhanced alot of salt or sodium. This is not good for your blood pressure and can cause other health concerns when used too much. To summarize, Doritos have salt, unhealthy fat, artificial flavors and not very many vitamins and minerals.
Now let’s check out a bag of raw spinach that is mostly used for making salads. It costs about $1.99. When you eat Doritos, it’s as if your trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. Your body has to work hard to identify and then use its ingredients to keep functioning. Baby spinach leaves are the opposite. In relation to what your body needs, they are successfully and easily fitting a round peg into a round hole. According to the book, Fourteen Foods that will Change Your Life, Superfoods by Steven Pratt, M.D and Kathy Matthews, raw spinach is a food packed full of natural things your body really needs. It contains Vitamin K, A and C, Folic acid, and Lutein plus others that your body is probably screaming out for because it hasn’t received them in such a long time.
I buy one bag of spinach a week. And then I only eat about one cup after dinner while I watch the news. One time I ate a bunch of it and then got a stomachache. I didn’t like it for about a week. But then I bought another bag and now limit myself to only about a cup. I’ve only been eating this reasonable amount during the week and Ginny and I have nearly finished the bag. I have noticed that recently I don’t feel the need to take a nap as much and I wake up from my after work nap easier.
I know this superfood is making an impact and it will continue to help me as I continue to keep eating it as just a snack!
