Martha Washington’s Great Cake

Hey, when was the last time you tried some cake from the 18th century? I was watching the Travel Channel on TV a couple of weeks ago and saw them actually make a cake following the recipe of Martha Washington, wife of George! I went to their site, found it and wanted to pass it along to you. On the TV program they told how Martha was an excellent hostess to parties so long ago. Here it is. Back then they actually baked the frosting on the cake.

My Prayer Life

I have lots of time to think at work. I talk to God on the job. Here’s some of the things I pray. I pray that the people on my assembly line (about 90) would think good thoughts (Philippians 4:8). I pray that they would even think about God and try to figure Him out or not be mad at Him anymore or that they would have the desire get closer to Him. I even boldly ask that a Great Awakening would come (you know, a big revival where people would get a sense of the presence of God and then search out who He is and have a passion to live for Him). Since I have a great boss who thoughtfully takes care of us I pray for him too, that he would be a man of great integrity and honor God with his excellent talents. I pray also that he would have a happy family life. And then, of course, I pray for my husband and our family. I pray for things like our finances, parenting skills and that our children would have a happy, healthy and productive childhood.

Family Bible: Week of 3.19.06

Hey, did you know Joseph was ruler second only to Pharoah, King of Egypt? Did you also know he spent time in prison after being falsely accused?
And did you also know Moses survived a baby massacre because Pharoah’s daughter found him floating in the river in a homemade basket and then she took the baby and with the encouragement of Miriam (Moses’ big sister) she allowed his real mom to nurse him?
You just gotta read more this week!:

The Emerald Isle’s Hero of God

What did you do for Saint Patrick’s Day? Or as some say Saint Patty’s Day. Did you wear green, drink green beer and listen to the once-a-year old favorite When Irish Eyes Are Smiling? One year I won some green money in a radio contest. Last year my friend’s daughter had to make a trap for a leprechan for school. What about Saint Patrick did he really chase the snakes out of Ireland like they say? Well, just like Christmas and Easter, the true meaning of this holiday must stand against the imaginative myths that have gathered throughout time. Except most people never learn hear who St. Patrick really was. I finally heard when I was in my late 20’s and listening to a Dr. D. James Kennedy sermon on the radio.
This year the story was retold in a three minute talk given by Chuck Colson on his interesting radio program called Breakpoint(.org). I also found a few excellent books about this unsung hero at his site.*

Hymn: Blessed Be the Name

This week I plan to sing with my family the hymn Blessed Be the Name. It is found on page 50 of one of our old Baptist Hymnals. I did some research on The Cyber Hymnal website and learned a few facts about the songs origin.
Blessed Be the Name contains words written by Charles Wesley. The words are similar to those found in the hymn O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing which originated in 1739. Charles lived from 1707 to 1788. He and his brother, John wrote around 6000 hymns in their lifetime and help founded the Methodist movement which has become the Methodist church of today.

Family Bible Study

“We had Bible reading and prayer right after supper, even before I cleaned up the kitchen,” says Mrs. Graham. “We all got down on our knees and prayed, yes we did, sometimes from twenty to thirty minutes. That was the main event of the day in our house.”* Billy Graham’s mother gave a peek into her family life when her son was young through that quote. Surely God would smile down on such dedication as their entire family gave regular disciplined time to the One who made them a family.

He Died for our Freedom

Outside my bedroom window there is a field. Sometimes when I get up in the morning I look out. I just want to look at it. It’s so peaceful. An empty field where the grass grows long and wild. I enjoy the quietness as I watch the wind gently bend the now golden blades of varied lengths.
I then breathe a small sigh of relief as I study the familiar scenery. Yeah, it’s still there. I mean freedom. Then I say a small prayer. Thank you, God, I’m an American and thank you America is still free today.

To Everything there is a Season

Deena, can you play this song on your guitar?
A good song is impactful and can even change your mood. I enjoy listening to an upbeat rock and roll song. But as a Christian I’ve had this major dilemma almost all my life. That is, there are only a tiny amount of rock and roll songs that honor God. Most of them are about what the world considers “love” between two people. I guess there is hardly any room for honoring God when as the music maker, most party, take drugs, overindulge in drinking and promiscuity.
I have found one song. It’s by the Byrds and is taken from Ecclesiastes 3:1-8. The Bible passage was written by King Solomon, a man to whom God blessed with an incredible amount of wisdom over two thousand years ago. Please read the amazing passage about how young Solomon got his wisdom, I Kings 3:5-15, 2 Chronicles 1:7-12! (Dare I, as a mother, pray that my children have such astounding wisdom?) I love to read that because Solomon was humbly asking for God’s help. And God overwhelmingly came to his assistance.
Uh, oh yeah, back to the Byrd’s song:
Chorus: To everything (Turn, turn, turn)
There is a season (Turn, turn, turn)
And a time to every purpose under Heaven
