“Prayer of Repentance”
by Pastor Joe Wright before the Kansas Senate
KANSAS SENATE OPENING PRAYER
January 23, 1996 by Pastor Joe Wright
When Minister Joe Wright of Central Christian Church was asked to open the new session of the Kansas Senate, everyone was expecting the usual generalities, but this is what they heard:
The Prayer of Repentance
Heavenly Father, we come before you today to ask your forgiveness and seek
your direction and guidance.
We know your Word says, “Woe to those who call evil good,” but that’s exactly
what we’ve done.
We have lost our spiritual equilibrium and inverted our values.
We confess that we have ridiculed the absolute truth of your Word and called it moral pluralism.
We have worshipped other gods and called it multiculturalism.
We have endorsed perversion and called it an alternative lifestyle.
We have exploited the poor and called it the lottery.
We have neglected the needy and called it self-preservation.
We have rewarded laziness and called it welfare.
We have killed our unborn and called it choice.
We have shot abortionists and called it justifiable.
We have neglected to discipline our children and called it building esteem.
We have abused power and called it political savvy.
We have coveted our neighbors’ possessions and called it ambition.
We have polluted the air with profanity and pornography and called it freedom of expression.
We have ridiculed the time-honored values of our forefathers and called it
enlightenment.
Search us O God and know our hearts today; try us and see if there be some
wicked way in us; cleanse us from every sin and set us free.
Guide and bless these men and women who have been sent here by the people of
Kansas, and who have been ordained by you, to govern this great state.
Grant them your wisdom to rule and may their decisions direct us to the center of your will. I ask it in the name of your son, the living savior, Jesus Christ.
Amen.
This was the text of the original prayer delivered January 23, 1996 by Pastor
Joe Wright to the Kansas House of Representatives in Topeka.

Psalm 112 Prayer

Here’s a Psalm I can turn into a prayer for my family =)
Psalm 112 (King James Version)
Psalm 112
1Praise ye the LORD. Blessed is the man that feareth the LORD, that delighteth greatly in his commandments.
2His seed shall be mighty upon earth: the generation of the upright shall be blessed.
3Wealth and riches shall be in his house: and his righteousness endureth for ever.
4Unto the upright there ariseth light in the darkness: he is gracious, and full of compassion, and righteous.
5A good man sheweth favour, and lendeth: he will guide his affairs with discretion.
6Surely he shall not be moved for ever: the righteous shall be in everlasting remembrance.
7He shall not be afraid of evil tidings: his heart is fixed, trusting in the LORD.
8His heart is established, he shall not be afraid, until he see his desire upon his enemies.
9He hath dispersed, he hath given to the poor; his righteousness endureth for ever; his horn shall be exalted with honour.
10The wicked shall see it, and be grieved; he shall gnash with his teeth, and melt away: the desire of the wicked shall perish.

What Is Happiness?

Sometimes I lose site of what happiness is. Here’s a clue:
“Do not let your happiness depend on something you may lose… only [upon] the Beloved who will never pass away.”
— C. S. Lewis
I know this also, it’s an intentionally chosen attitude.

I Love The Bible

I love the Bible. I love all of it. It’s old. It links me to different people at church, the young and the old. When I was in college I would walk down peaceful country roads and memorize the Sermon on the Mount. I love words in general and the words of the Bible are the most treasured. It Psalm 119 someone wrote of the goodness of the Bible. I read some of it this morning for a quiet time. Until I read it, I was feeling a little down and then I remember how fun it is too get excited about the Word of God. Here’s a good memory passage:
Psalm 119:129-136 (King James Version)
129Thy testimonies are wonderful: therefore doth my soul keep them.
130The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.
131I opened my mouth, and panted: for I longed for thy commandments.
132Look thou upon me, and be merciful unto me, as thou usest to do unto those that love thy name.
133Order my steps in thy word: and let not any iniquity have dominion over me.
134Deliver me from the oppression of man: so will I keep thy precepts.
135Make thy face to shine upon thy servant; and teach me thy statutes.
136Rivers of waters run down mine eyes, because they keep not thy law.

Rules W/out Relationships equal Rebellion

Josh McDowell said this. He was talking about teenagers. It’s so true. If you come down hard on your teenagers, as a parent because you truly want them to be better than the average but you don’t build a relationship with them they won’t respond very well. You gotta let them know they are important to you because you spend time with them and go out of your way to help and enjoy them.
