I was on my way to fill in for a middle school teacher around 10:15 this morning. The morning was cold with a dusting of snow. As I started out, the roads were all clear. I decided I would take a common route to my destination.
Some of the road is hilly.
When I came to the top of the first hill, I suddenly saw a police car stopped in my lane not very far in the distance. I quickly braked only to realize the road was covered in ice. I didn’t have much of a choice I would have to drive off the road trying to cautiously and quickly stop. I steered to the right and drove on to a lawn. I had to scream out, “Jesus help me!” He did. I ended up stopped about four feet from a barbed-wire fence.
My three word prayer worked. (It has also has worked two other times in avoiding a wreck.) To be honest, it seems like such instances are the most memorable things I’ve done to have more faith in God. I’m backed into a corner with no choice but to quickly ask for assistance and then leave the results up to Him.
It took about three times of getting stuck in the yard until I was able to get going in my car again. A business man who was trying to get his wrecked car off the road pulled me out of the homeowner’s yard. (This is why the police officer was trying to stop traffic.)
I was so frustrated right after I drove onto the lawn. As soon as my car stopped I got out and ran after the policeman. I told him I had almost had a head-on collision with him. I told him, “Thank God I didn’t hit your car!” I told him they needed to block the road at the bottom of the hill. It was so true. Then I realized I was talking loud and may have sounded rude to him so I told him I wasn’t trying to be rude but this was very frustrating to me. He said he was frustrated too and then told me to go wait in my car.
I left my phone number on the door of the homeowners. The policeman annoyed me. I understand he was trying to stop traffic from running into a wreck but he did it in the wrong way. He shouldn’t have had his car parked in my lane at the top of the hill. I’m not responsible for driving onto the lawn. I saved our city several thousands of dollars because they didn’t have to repair a wrecked police car.
