Grammar Lesson 22~Pronouns And Antecedents

The word for which the pronoun stands is called its antecedent. It may be in the same sentence, in a previous sentence, or not given at all. An example would be The boy threw the football. He threw it over the fence. Boy is the antecedent for he, and football is the antecedent for it. A pronoun can be an antecedent for another pronoun. He likes his new car. He is the antecedent for his. The antecedent always comes before the pronoun for which it is the antecedent.
Pick out the pronouns and their antecedents in these sentences.
1. He ran after his dad.
2. Jennie wanted her doll for bedtime.
3. The rabbit hopped into its hole.
4. They will help you with your work themselves.
5. The teacher gave us homework everyday, and she made our lives miserable.

Chuck Swindol

God uses Chuck Swindol to help me learn the things of God. I love to study people who are a success. If I can, I love the chance to learn from them in a candid way. Five years ago in the month of June I heard the bio of Chuck Swindol on the Family Life Today program. I was so enthralled as Chuck Swindol honestly in a conversational way told the story of his life. I tried to memorize the details as I heard them from my car radio but I wanted to go back and listen some more. Now I’m finally doing that. Here are the broadcasts and transcripts from the program on June 3, 2002 and June 4, 2002.

Forgiveness, Power and Hope

I’ve been having some intellectual fun on the first day of this new year. Christian devotions always give advice for living better. So I checked out the Back to the Bible website to see what some of their devotions discussed. Here’s a good quote from Joy and Strength by Mary Wilder Tileston.
. . .How could I be anything but quite happy
if I believed always that
all the past is forgiven,
and all the present furnished with power,
and all the future bright with hope,. . .
~James Smetham

Key details-
1. past forgiven
2. present power-filled
3. future hope-filled
This Bible verse from the devotion makes a great word picture in your mind about God’s love for His people (good memory verse):
As the mountains are round about Jerusalem,
so the Lord is round about His people
from henceforth even forever.
PSALMS 125:2

Personally, this devotion refers me back to Lamentations 3:22-26
22It is of the LORD’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.
23They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.
24The LORD is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him.
25The LORD is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him.
26It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the LORD.

Jonathan Edwards’ 70 Resolutions

Most are looking for resolutions to better themselves in the coming year.
This morning, I was reading Our Daily Bread and found reference to the 70 Resolutions of Jonathan Edwards. The educated scholarly type of his time in the 1700’s would write out resolutions for the life and regularly refer back (example: Ben Franklin and George Washington).
I was so excited when I found a copy of the resolutions online @ The Jonathan Edwards Center At Yale University. . I must say, I was scepticle at pulling info from such a liberal college. But after checking out the site and reading through the PDF file of the list of 70, I consider it trustworthy enough.

Resolutions For 2008

I’ve figured out a resolution for the New Year. In the Bible, it says that someday every knee shall bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, even athiests. As a Christian this is very simple for me to do and can take a very small amount of time.
2008 Resolution~Bow in humble prayer on a regular basis, that even though wrongdoing is so prevailant in the world, I respect Jesus, that He is, even now the King of Kings, the Lord of Lord, and the Ruler of all existance.
Infallable Word of God says:
Romans 14:10-12
Philippians 2:9-11
Isaiah 45:22-24 (NKJV)
1 Corinthians 15:52-54
This is a truth, every unbeliever and/or follower after his own desires will someday, say, “Yes, Jesus is to be worshiped as the ultimate king. . . I’ll just go ahead and give Him His due respect now.
Some who read this blog entry may consider me odd. I don’t care. I’ve got to have something to cling to in life that satisfies my longing soul and I find that in Christ, God and the Bible.
